Field Note: Imagined Futures’ Cyberpunk episode

Imagined Futures is a mini-series by the Object podcast. On the commute to work last week I listened to their Cyberpunk episode.

In truth, I actually had to listen to it a second time with pen and paper, so I could catch all the primary sources they mentioned. I had no idea that US Steel produced a set of concept art books (created by the visual futurist Syd Mead no less). Or that those books inspired the aesthetic of the original Star Wars.

The episode is around 20 minutes long, and is worth the time, even if the genre isn’t totally your thing. The story it traces of the evolution of the genre is entertaining in its own right.

Meanwhile, I’ve dug out my copy of Neuromancer and started re-reading it as a result of listening to it.
